What is Windows Registry?

The registry is key in configuring and controlling Windows 11/10/8/7 machines. It is the repository for both system-wide and per-user settings. Moreover, the data in the registry is stored in more than one file; each is called a hive.

Windows and most programs store their configuration data in the registry. Over time, as programs are used, installed, and uninstalled, the registry becomes fragmented. This creates obsolete registry entries that need to be cleaned.

Think of Registry Database as a chart with rows and columns in a big queue. When an entry is removed, a new entry is made into a blank field with no data. This is why it still occupies the same amount of space as before. This is done to save information in the same place.

Therefore, when new items are added to the registry, they are added at the bottom of a queue. So over time, the registry ends up with many blank cells. This situation is similar to disk fragmentation, which occurs when the system creates and deletes files on the disk. This simple image can also explain it.

This significantly impacts the performance of Windows and programs that heavily use the registry. It is most evident at boot time and when running programs that use many COM classes (such as Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Visual Studio, and commercial software). Data is written to the registry whenever you install the software, so it can be uninstalled later.

When to Use Registry Cleaner and Optimizer?

Even though new software is yet to be installed over time, Windows Registry grows as most programs store their Data in it. This is why every update to the registry extends Windows Registry, as old data is deleted and new information is inserted. This makes the windows slow and decreases the response of programs.

To solve all these problems, we recommend you clean obsolete registry entries and defrag the registry:

  • Every 30 days.
  • When new software is installed.
  • When existing software is uninstalled or removed.

How much space I will gain

This is a challenging question. Besides space optimization, there are other benefits. Data is fully defragmented and linear. So the access is fast, which results in better response time.

Sometimes the space benefits will only be 1% to 3% of the total registry size. But we will get a complete linear registry without fragmentation or insufficient data.

In our tests on Windows 11/10/8/7, where registry size is sometimes above 25 MB, the space benefit 768 KB 3%, which is approx 1 MB, is also a considerable performance improvement. It saves 1 MB of precious memory and has vast performance improvement.

Steps to clean and optimize the registry

Cleaning and optimizing the registry is a two-step process. When you see the registry cleaner and optimizer, you will find two buttons of our interest.

  • Start Scan Now
  • Optimize Now

Start Scan Now

This is the first step toward registry cleaning and defragging. It will run a scan, give detailed information about obsolete registry files, and help fix them.

At this stage, the registry is not compacted or replaced. It only shows a summary and results of the scanning and defragging process.

Optimize Now

Optimize Now, Defrags the registry in the background. You will have to restart your system to replace your un-optimized registry with an optimized one. Registry Cleaner and Optimizer will ask you to restart your system. If you skip, you will still be using your un-optimized registry.

Important : While the compaction process, you may notice a slowdown or some of your programs not responding. It is perfectly normal as only one program is allowed to access the registry. Registry Cleaner and Optimizer to prevent errors locks the registry during the optimization process.
