Laptop Stuck On Hibernating – Here’s How To Fix It

Windows 10 is a powerful and popular operating system, and users love it more than Windows 11, which is full of issues. However, some users have lately complained of getting stuck in hibernation. If you are stuck in a similar situation, here is what you can do to resolve a computer stuck on getting Windows ready.

Reasons for Windows 10 laptop stuck on Hibernating

  • Due to battery drain
  • Outdated driver

What is Hibernate in Windows laptops?

Hibernation is available only for laptops & it is a combination of sleep mode and shutdown. In contrast to sleep mode, where the running apps and files are stored in RAM, more power is consumed; in Hibernation, they are saved on the hard disk. This means the laptop will run from the previous state as it was before you put it into hibernation.

But sometimes, the laptop can take longer to boot, meaning Windows 10 gets stuck in hibernation. Luckily, there are different ways to fix Windows 10 stuck, and this post explains how.

How To Fix Windows Laptops Get Stuck in the Hibernate Mode?

When your laptop gets stuck in hibernate state, restart the computer and see if you can boot it normally or not. If not, follow the steps given below:

Method 1 – Drain power from the laptops with removable batteries.

  • Shut down your laptop.
  • Remove the plug from the power socket and detach all connected devices.
  • Next, remove the laptop battery.
  • Now press and hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. This will drain the remaining power from your laptop.
  • Input the battery into the laptop.
  • Connect it to the power supply and start the laptop.

This step will help bypass the Hibernating screen and fix the laptop that won’t resume from the hibernation issue.

Method 2 – Drain Power From the Laptops with a non-removable Battery

If you use a laptop with a non-removable battery, follow these steps to drain battery power:

  • Force shut down your laptop by holding down the power button.
  • Stop the power supply by removing the plug from the socket.
  • Next, disconnect all peripherals.
  • Press and hold the power button for up to 60 seconds.
  • This will drain the battery.
  • Then power the laptop by connecting it to the power supply.

You should now be able to see the login screen.

If the above technique did not help, try the following steps to bypass the Hibernating screen.

  • Shut down the laptop by pressing and holding the power button.
  • Remove the battery > connect the charging cable and start the laptop without attaching the battery.
  • You will now see the Hibernating screen.
  • Now, force shut down your laptop as in Step 1.
  • When it completely shuts down, connect the battery and see if it helps. You should be able to log in normally. To keep it that way, follow the troubleshooting steps explained below.

Note : If the issue persists, you’ll need to perform Startup Repair. To learn how to do that, keep reading.

Method 3 – Disable Fast Startup

Some users said disabling fast startup did help fix the hibernation issue on Windows. To disable it, follow these steps:

  • In the Windows search bar, type Power & Sleep settings.
  • Click Additional power settings.

  • From the right pane, click Choose what the power buttons do.

  • Uncheck the option box next to Turn on fast startup (recommended) > click the Save changes button.
  • Shut down the PC, and wait for 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Restart the PC; it should now not go into hibernation.

Method 4 – Run the Power Troubleshooter

To fix Windows-related issues, Microsoft offers a built-in troubleshooter. Using it, run the power troubleshooter and see if it helps.

  • Press Windows + I to open Windows settings.
  • Click Update & Security.
  • Select Troubleshoot from the left panel > click Additional troubleshooter.
  • Click the Power option > Run the troubleshooter.

  • Follow on-screen prompts to complete the process.

Method 5 – Restore Power Settings

The problem Windows gets stuck on Hibernating screen might occur due to the power issues. To resolve it, reset the power plan to default settings.

  • Press Windows + R and open the Run window.
  • Type Control Panel and press the Enter key.
  • Select Power Options.

  • Click Change plan settings for the selected plan.

  • Click Restore default settings for this plan > Save Changes.

Method 6 – Disconnect external devices

Sometimes externally connected devices can be the reason behind Windows 10 getting stuck. Therefore, there’s no harm in disconnecting them and checking if it helps with the hibernation issue.

  • Shut down your laptop.
  • Remove the power cable and detach all connected peripherals – USB, mouse, HDD, dongle, etc. Also, remove the CD/DVD if you have an optical drive.
  • Switch on the laptop and see if this works.

Method 7- Update display driver

To keep the Windows and connected device working correctly, the driver should be up to date. You can use Device Manager, update Windows, go to the manufacturer’s website or use a third-party tool. Where the latter is an automatic way to update drivers, the rest are manual ways. This is why a driver updating tool is the most straightforward way to update drivers.

Using it, you can easily detect and update outdated drives. To use Advanced Driver Updater, follow these steps:

  • Download and install the best driver updater for Windows.

  • Launch Advanced Driver Updater and click Start Scan Now to scan the PC for outdated drivers.

  • Since an outdated display driver causes the problem, we will update it by clicking the Update driver link. If you are a registered user, you can update all outdated drivers.

  • Restart the PC to apply changes.
  • You should no longer face the problem.

Method 8 – Perform Startup Repair

Even after following all the techniques mentioned above, if Windows 10 is still stuck on the Hibernating screen, perform Startup Repair. To learn that, follow these steps:

  • Force shut down your laptop.
  • Again power on the laptop.
  • When you see the Windows logo, immediately shut down the laptop by pressing the power button.
  • Repeat this step 2 to 3 times. Windows will now enter the recovery mode and see the Automatic Repair screen.
  • Click Advanced Options > go to “Troubleshoot > Advanced Options.”
  • Click Start-up Repair.

Follow on-screen instructions; this will fix the hibernate stuck problem.

How To Stop The laptop From Hibernating.

Once you break the loop and normally work again, disable hibernate to prevent yourself from facing the same situation. To do so, follow these steps:

  • Run Command Prompt as administrator. In the Windows search field, enter Command Prompt > select scan results > click Run as administrator.
  • Type powercfg -h off and press enter.
  • This will disable the hibernate mode and put you off the hook from facing Windows stuck while getting ready.
