How to know If Your VPN is Hacked

How to know if your vpn is hacked

Do you use VPN to bypass geographical restrictions, anonymously browse the web, avoid ISP throttling and prevent your data from being hacked? Yes. Then you must wonder if a VPN, like other devices and services, can be hacked or not.

The answer to this question is tricky, as hacking a VPN is difficult because it uses OpenVPN or WireGuard protocols alongside a combination of AES encryption. This certainly makes hacking almost impossible however, as cybercriminals are known to take advantage of vulnerabilities, we can’t ignore the fact that by finding the VPN connection weaknesses, they can hack it.

In this guide, we will explain these vulnerabilities, the different ways a VPN in which a VPN hack takes place, what happens when a VPN is compromised, and how to protect yourself.

Why Are You At Risk If Your VPN Is Hacked?

Before we begin identifying how to stay safe from hackers trying to get into your VPN configuration, it is crucial to understand the exact factors that can lead you to get hacked.

You see, there are several vulnerabilities that you need to address while analyzing your VPN security. Some factors relate to your connection, system privacy, and VPN client.

Common VPN Vulnerabilities

  1. Outdated encryption algorithm
  2. Obsolete authentication methods.
  3. Outdated tunneling protocols.
  4. Authentication older than SHA-256
  5. Improper server and network management.
  6. Public DNS
  7. Data logs

Learning about these vulnerabilities, you may have understood how your personal information, data, internet logs, and, indirectly, your PC are at risk. Getting your VPN hacked completely eradicates the entire purpose of using a VPN to browse the internet, as someone is directly monitoring your every move online. Losing your privacy is your biggest risk when your VPN is hacked.

Different Ways VPNs can be Hacked

Using the following methods, threat actors can hack a VPN connection:-

  1. By exploiting VPN protocol vulnerabilities.
  2. Cryptographic attacks.
  3. Take benefit of IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks.
  4. Compromising a VPN server.
  5. Stealing encryption keys.

How do VPNs get hacked?

To understand how VPNs get hacked, let’s first learn how VPNs work.

Brief Summary of the VPN working

  1. You download a VPN.
  2. Connect it to a server > and open a website.
  3. The VPN will now use the connection protocol to connect the device to the server and encrypt data.
  4. When this data reaches the VPN server, it will be decrypted, and the server will connect you to the website you entered the URL for.
  5. The VPN will then decrypt the data, and you will see all the website data.

To hack this process, the cyber attacker takes benefit of VPN vulnerability and compromises the data. This means they decrypt the data using a brute force attack before transmitting it to either end.

Popular VPN data breaches

One small mistake can lead to a major breach, even when it is a popular VPN service provider. Here are some examples.

Pulse Secure VPN Hack, NordVPN Hack

SuperVPN, Gecko VPN, and Chat VPN hack This hack took place as the default database credentials weren’t changed.

What happens when VPN is hacked?

When a VPN is hacked, it is not just financial and data loss; it is more than that. Here’s a list of risks you can expect:

  1. A hacked VPN can enable cybercriminals to take over all the connected devices, as they can infect them with malware, spyware, ransomware, and other viruses.
  2. The credentials saved on the device are leaked, and anyone eavesdropping can access them.
  3. Hackers can use the compromised divide to steal credentials, money, identity theft, and commit credit card fraud.
  4. Once exposed to VPN hack, the device is open to surveillance.
  5. A hacked VPN connection can make you a victim of a Man-in-the-Middle attack.

On my home screen a dot was where my key use to be and at several times when I looked at my Google one VPN it was showing 2 number 1’s as if I had 2vpns on the home screen when I only have 1 is this a hack.

    Dear Rachel,

Thank you for writing to us.

Probability of a VPN hack is there. However, we recommend you reset your Google One VPN. Also note, when you often switch between LAN and Wi-Fi connections, there are possibilities that VPN might take that as two connections. Hence the 2 number 1’s. Still if you are not sure, you can try using a real-time antivirus that can scan your network and check if there are any hindrances in the same.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks and Regards
