Games Keep Crashing Randomly on PC – Here’s How to Fix!

If you have a PC where your games keep crashing despite meeting the minimum game requirements, this post is for you!

Several Windows users have shared about games crashing out of nowhere on the PC. The error messages on the screen are vague, so they cannot identify the proper reason behind the unnecessary stuttering, freezing, and crashing of these games. Sure, it is understandable if you are trying to run a heavy game on a PC that does not meet its requirements or does not have enough GPU memory to handle its performance. However, what would you do if you had a high-end PC but the games kept crashing?

Well, that is what we will talk about in this post. Keep reading, as by the end of this blog, you will be able to identify why the games keep crashing randomly on PC and what can be done about it.

Random Crashes on PC – Why Does This Happen?

Before we begin with the fixes, it is important to identify why it happens. Why do games crash randomly, even with all the necessary components available? Most users do not know the exact reason and are confused about the situation.

Well, there are a bunch of reasons responsible for crashing games. These include –

  1. High CPU Usage
  2. Outdated GPU Drivers
  3. Game File Errors
  4. Power Issues
  5. Antivirus & Firewall Errors

There are other issues as well. However, they are not widespread. Issues such as the availability of required specifications, using a gaming client, etc., are subjective and vary from user to user. However, these issues can appear on any PC, irrespective of what type of GPU or CPU you use.

Check out the next section to find ways to help you eliminate these errors and finish the process for you.

How to Fix Random Game Crashes on Windows?

Knowing about the issues mentioned above, you may be thinking of ways to help you eliminate them. Well, the first thing to do whenever your game starts crashing is to ensure that your PC is updated and is using the correct version of Windows. Go to the System settings and check if there are Windows updates available. If there are, install them on priority, as it will enhance the overall compatibility of the game.

Give your PC a quick restart to refresh the memory registers. After that, try the following fixes if the crashing persists.

Fix 1 – Check Resource Usage Before Launching the Game

Some games require proper resource management to run properly. If an existing application is overusing your PC’s resources such as RAM, Memory, Network, etc., the game you are trying to launch will likely crash due to the lack of bandwidth available on your PC.

To ensure everything is managed, you must use the Task Manager before launching the game.

Step 1 – Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager.

Step 2 – Check the current usage of all the resources available.
Step 3 – If either of the resources appears to be extensively used, click on the same to sort the app list according to their usage.
Step 4 – Select the app that uses the most available resources and click on End Task to stop it.

After you have reduced the usage, launch your game, and it should run properly without any crashes. If the game keeps freezing, the resources are to blame, so this will take care of that, too.

Fix 2 – Allow the Game Through Firewall

If you recently installed a game and it keeps stuttering or crashing randomly, your firewall may not be allowing it to function properly. You should add the application to the Firewall exclusion list.

Here are the steps to do so –

Step 1 – Press Win+R to bring up the Run search.
Step 2 – In the Run, use the command firewall.cpl and hit Enter.

Step 3 – In the opened Windows, spot the Allow App through Firewall option in the left pane and click on it.
Step 4 – Enable the changes by clicking on the Allow Changes button available in the Window opened.

Step 5 – Click on Add another application and navigate to the .exe file of your game.

Once you have reached the game, you can easily finish the process by saving the changes and adding the file to this list. After this step, you should be able to play the game easily without crashing or freezing.

Fix 3 – Update Existing Drivers on PC

Drivers are crucial for your resources to work smoothly. No matter what type of GPU, Sound Card, Display Adapter, or Network Adapter you are using, they are of no use if the drivers are unavailable. Hence, keeping the existing drivers updated is a crucial step while troubleshooting game crashes on Windows.

To update these drivers manually, you can visit the Device Manager and finish the process individually for each driver. That is the traditional way of updating the drivers. However, it is not efficient as it is very time-consuming. To help you save time and allow you to make the most of your current drivers, we recommend you use Advanced Driver Updater. (List of Driver Updating Tools)

It is a tool that simplifies the driver update process for Windows and allows you to update them all in three easy steps –

Step 1 – Download and install the application. Launch it on your PC.

Step 2 – After launching, you may find the Start Scan Now button. Click on it, and it will start scanning your current drivers.

Step 3 – Once the scan is over, all the outdated drivers are available in a list. Simply click the Update All button, and the application will initiate the process to update them.

After updating the drivers, restart your PC, and you should see the difference while playing games. Upgraded drivers are necessary to resolve random crashes while playing games on Windows.

Other than these fixes, you can also uninstall and reinstall the game, as there may be an issue with the corrupt game files. Also, ensure that if you are playing a heavy game on your laptop, you connect it to a power source, as limited power can lead to unnecessary crashes.

If you have any other doubts about why games keep crashing randomly on PC, feel free to post them in the comments section below. That’s all for this post. Thanks for reading, and good luck!
