Data error (cyclic redundancy check) is an issue that keeps popping up when you try to copy files from one drive to another, and the drive is inaccessible. While it may not be a problem for other applications installed on your PC, it may directly affect the current operation you want to carry out. Not to mention, it can indirectly impact your software performance.
Bad sectors are generally the direct cause of this error. If your drive has ever encountered issues related to cyclic redundancy, you must check it for compatibility and corruption, as hardware issues develop quite easily in hard drives.
Some of the main reasons why you might have encountered the Data error (cyclic redundancy check) on your PC include –
If any of these issues persist on your PC, the Data error cyclic redundancy check is bound to happen. The good news is that all these issues are manageable. With the help of some of the easiest and most effective methods, you can resolve the error on your PC yourself. Let’s look at some of the fixes right away!
The CHKDSK command is an internal utility designed in Windows to check a disk for errors. Since the CRC is an internal error, this is the best command to check and resolve the issue.
Step 1 – Go to the start menu and search for Command Prompt.
Step 2 – Click on Run as Administrator to launch the Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
Step 3 – In the Command Prompt window, use the command chkdsk D: /f /r /x
Once the command is run, you can identify the issues. The command can check the drive and resolve the issue on its own. You can replace the letter D with the letter of the drive you want to check.

Another internal tool found in the explorer itself is the Disk Check option. It is available in properties and is quite capable of handling the CRC disk error on Windows. Here’s how you can initiate it –
Step 1 – Go to This PC section in the Files Explorer to spot all the drive partitions.
Step 2 – Right-click on the drive you want to check and open its Properties from the context menu.
Step 3 – Click on tools to find the Disk Check utility in the properties. Simply click on Check, and you will find instructions on the screen.
Click according to the tool’s requirements, and you can run the check smoothly. After you have finished the scan on your PC, restart it so that the applied change takes effect properly. Try entering the drive again to check if it works properly or not.
If the Disk Check shows no signs of damage to the drive, chances are that your drive is fine but the system files have an issue. The easiest way to diagnose and rectify this error is to run a System File Check. Here’s how you do it –
Step 1 – Launch Command Prompt via the start menu. (Run as administrator).
Step 2 – Use the command SFC/Scannow and hit enter to start System File Checker.
Step 3 – Let the scan run, once it finishes you can restart your computer and check if the Cyclic Redundance Check CRC error persists.
In case running the commands did not help you, there are chances that there is malware that keeps causing the error. You can try running a quick scan using Windows Security so that it finds the problematic file and fixes it right away.
Here are the steps to scan malware on your PC –
Step 1 – Go to the Start menu and search for Windows Security
Step 2 – In Windows Security, click on Virus and Threat Protection.
Step 3 – Click on Quick Scan and start checking your PC for malware.
Let the scan run and once it is over, you should try running the process again and check if the Cyclic Redundancy Check data error appears again or not. If it appears, then try the next fix.
If none of this is working and you cannot recover the drive using the internal tools, there may be no option other than to format the drive. Keep in mind that this will lose all your data; however will help you recover the storage. Now it is up to you. You can brick the drive by not formatting it due to drive data or simply format it and use it for other purposes.
To format the drive –
Step 1 – Spot the drive on your computer and right-click on it.
Step 2 – From the Context menu, click Format and open the drive format wizard.
Step 3 – In the Format Wizard, check the file system in use and choose the NTFS
Confirm the format by clicking on Format and clicking Yes on the prompt. You can now access the drive, but all the data will be lost.
Other than these methods, you can send the drive for manual checking to the service center; however, they may not be able to recover the data.
You may be wondering what the point of fixing a drive is if the data is unsafe. Well, we do understand that the data is important. This is why we recommend that before you format the drive or unlock the CRC error from your PC, you run a quick data recovery regime so that you have a backup if the data is lost.
The Advanced Disk Recovery is a perfect tool to help you achieve the same. This advanced data recovery software is designed to manage data even in the toughest of circumstances. It can scan the disk and go to its roots to retrieve the data and receive it for you. The best part is that it works on complete drives and finishes the job instantly.
Here’s how you can use it –
Step 1 – Download the tool via the link below
Step – 2 After you have launched the tool, select the drive that is causing the issue using the dropdown.
Step 3 – After you have chosen a Disk, you can click on Start Scan Now. It will ask you what type of scan you want to run. Since it is still in error, we recommend you use a Quick scan.
Step 4 – After the scan, the tool shows you all the files found in the drive.
Step 5 – Choose the files you want to keep and click the Recover button.
Let the tool work its magic, and you will have all your data back to you quickly. Once you have recovered the data in a different drive and folder, you can easily format the drive and eliminate the Cyclic Redundancy Check Data error on your PC. This seems to be the only way to save data and drive both simultaneously.
