FIXED! Cast to Device Not Working on Windows

The cast-to-device feature on your Windows PC is a great utility tool if you often find yourself presenting to a panel. With this simple feature, you can instantly cast your current screen to a bigger secondary screen, making it easier for others to understand your concepts better. 

If Cast to Device is not working on your PC, you may also face issues in streaming content on your PC. The overall experience can be frustrating as a seamless feature is not working anymore. Usually, this feature stops working when there are permissions issues or errors with network sharing on Windows. 

So what do you do? Well, there are multiple ways to fix the Cast to Device feature on your PC and get it working flawlessly. In this post, let us take a look at them and identify ways you can get over the issue. 

Unable to Use Cast to Device on Windows? Try These Fixes!

As mentioned previously, the error occurs when there are issues with the feature configuration, permissions, or network sharing. To resolve these issues, there are three things that you can do – 

1. Ensure Your PC is Discoverable on a Network

Before you can use the Cast to Device feature and cast your current screen to another screen over a network, you should ensure that your PC is discoverable on the network. Making your PC discoverable enables incoming and outgoing connections, making it possible for other devices to discover your PC and allow it to cast. 

Here’s how you can do so – 

Step 1 – Go to the Start Menu and search for Network Status.

Step 2 – Click on the Available result to take you to the Network and Sharing Center.
Step 3 – Spot the Change Advanced Sharing Settings in the left pane and click on it.

Step 4 – The option will take you to the Network Sharing settings. Ensure that Network Discovery, Files, and printer sharing are toggled ON.

Step 5 – If not, toggle them ON and exit the settings.

Retry the Cast process, and it should work fine. 

2. Check Network Card Drivers for Update

If the PC is discoverable but cannot connect to other devices, two things may be bothering you. One is the internet connection, and the other is the network driver issue on Windows. 

To ensure that your internet connection is stable and the device you want to cast to is connected to the same network, simply check the internet connectivity and devices connected to the network. You may find this information easily.

However, if it is a later issue and the network drivers are causing problems, you may not have any other option but to update it. To update a network adapter driver, you can either go the traditional route and use the Advanced Driver Updater, or you may easily use the Advanced Driver Updater and instantly fetch the latest driver updates!

Here’s how the tool works – 

Step 1 – Download the Advanced Driver Updater on your PC and install it.

Step 2 – After installing the program, run it and use the Start Scan Now button to find the outdated drivers that cause the error.

Step 3 – After the list of drivers is available, click the Update All button, and the tool will take care of the rest.

As Advanced Driver Updater does, you need not worry about finding the updates, installing them, and applying the effects to the PC. All you have to do is finish the process, and you can use Cast to Device on your PC.

3. Enable Online Streaming Permissions on Windows (Windows 10 Only)

If it was not the driver causing the issue, and even if the PC is discoverable on the network, the issue might have arisen due to the streaming permissions on Windows. This is specifically for Windows 10 users, as the issue appears with Windows Media Player, which is unavailable on Windows 11.

Here are the settings you should check/alter – 

Step 1 – Launch Windows Media Player on Your PC.

Step 2 – In the Windows Media Player, click Stream > Allow Internet access to home media…

Step 3 – Choose Allow Internet access to home media on the pop-up window.
Step 4 – Go back to the Windows Media Player home.

Step 5 – Navigate to Turn on Media Streaming by clicking on Stream. Click Turn ON media streaming.
Step 6 – Return to the Windows Media Player Home after changing.
Step 7 – Again click on Stream And check if Automatically allow devices to play my media… is enabled. If not, enable it.

Step 8 – Exit the Windows Media Player window.
