How To Fix Astro a50/a40 Mic Not Working

You’re not alone if you’re having trouble with the mic not working on your Astro A50 or A40 headset. Whether it’s a connection issue, software glitch, or settings misconfiguration, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem. This guide will walk you through common fixes to get your microphone working again so you can get back to your gaming or voice chats without hassle.

Why Do You Face Astro a50/a40 Mic Problem

There are several reasons why the mic on your Astro A50 or A40 headset might not be working. Here are some common causes:

  • The most straightforward reason is that the mic is muted on the headset itself or via the MixAmp.
  • A loose or damaged cable between the headset and the MixAmp can cause the mic to stop working.
  • Your PC or console might be set to the wrong input device. Check your sound settings to ensure the Astro headset is selected as the default microphone.
  • Outdated or corrupted firmware can cause the mic to malfunction.
  • For PC users, outdated or missing drivers can interfere with the headset’s functionality. Sometimes, issues are specific to apps or platforms (like Discord, Xbox, or PlayStation).
  • If there’s physical damage to the microphone or the headset, it could prevent the mic from working. Check for any visible wear or damage, especially to the mic boom or cable.

How To Fix Astro a50/a40 Mic Not Working

If you’re experiencing issues with the Astro A50/A40 audio it can be frustrating, especially during gaming or voice chats. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and fix the problem:

Method 1 – Check the Mic Mute Button

Make sure the microphone is not muted. On the Astro A50 and A40, there’s usually a mute button on the headset. If the mic is muted, you won’t be able to transmit your voice.

Method 2 – Ensure Proper Connection

If you’re using the A50 wireless headset, ensure the base station is properly connected to the console/PC and the headset. Try re-pairing the headset by holding the power button on the A50 until it flashes, then press the pairing button on the base station.

If you’re using the A40 with a MixAmp, ensure all cables are securely connected. Double-check the cable running from the headset to the MixAmp and the MixAmp to your PC or console.

Method 3 – Test in Another Device

Test the mic on another PC to see if the headset or your original device is the issue. This will help you determine if the mic is physically broken or if the problem is with your settings. If the A50/A40 mic does not work with the second device, then chances are that you will have to replace the hardware. On the other hand, if it works fine with other devices, then the current device’s settings are to blame.

Method 4 – Adjust Sound Settings

Go to your sound settings in Windows and ensure that the Astro mic is selected as the default recording device. Here is what you need to do –

1. Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar.

2. Select “Sound Settings”.

3. Scroll down to Input and choose the Astro mic.

Method 5 – Update Firmware and Software

For both A50 and A40 models, you can use the Astro Command Center software to check for any available firmware updates. Outdated firmware may cause mic or audio issues.

1. Download the Astro Command Center from the Astro Gaming website or Microsoft Store.
2. Connect your headset to the PC and check for firmware updates within the software.

Method 6 – Adjust Mic Settings in Astro Command Center

In the Astro Command Center (ACC) software, you can adjust the microphone levels, gain, and other settings that could impact the mic’s performance. Ensure that the mic volume and input gain are appropriately set.

Method 7 – Check the Audio Cable and Adapter (For A40)

If you’re using a wired connection (A40), check the 3.5mm audio cable for any visible damage. Also, ensure the MixAmp or any adapters are correctly set up and the mic is plugged into the correct port.

Method 8 –  Reset the Headset

A50: If the problem persists, you can reset the Astro A50 by holding the power button for 15 seconds until the headset resets. This may help resolve connection or setting issues.

A40: For A40, you may try unplugging the MixAmp and headset and plugging them back in.

Method 9 – Test Mic in a Different App

Sometimes, the issue could be app-specific (e.g., Discord, Xbox Chat, etc.). Try testing the mic in a different app to rule out software issues.

Method 10 – Check for Hardware Damage

Physical Damage: Inspect the microphone and headset for physical damage or loose connections. If the mic has suffered physical damage (e.g., bent microphone boom, or frayed wires), you may need to contact Astro support for a replacement or repair.

Method 11 – Update Sound Drivers

Drivers help bridge the gap between hardware and software. Some experts suggest updating the Sound Card Drivers to fix minor issues if the device works properly. There are three ways to update drivers.

Download & Install Driver/Firmware Using The Manufacturer’s Website.

1. Visit the Logitech website to download the necessary driver or firmware.
2. Scroll down and click on Download Options to obtain the required firmware.
3. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen prompts to install the software.
4. Restart your PC and reconnect your A50/A40 headset to verify if the issue is resolved.

Download & Install Driver/Firmware Using The Device Manager

If the previous method doesn’t work or feels too technical, you can update your drivers using the Device Manager. Before proceeding, ensure your headset is connected to the PC and follow these steps.

1. Press Win + X to open the Power Menu.
2. Choose Device Manager from the list of options.
3. Expand Sound, Video, and Game Controllers to reveal your headset.
4.Right-click on the A50/A40 headset and select Update Drivers.
5. Choose Search Automatically for drivers and follow the on-screen instructions.

Note : If the driver is available in the Microsoft database, it will be automatically downloaded and installed. If no update is found, you'll see a message that the best driver is installed.

Download & Install Driver/Firmware Using The Advanced Driver Updater

Drivers are essential for enabling communication between hardware and software. Since the headset is not functioning, updating the drivers is necessary to resolve the issue. Follow these steps to update the driver using Advanced Driver Updater.

1. Download and install Advanced Driver Updater using the link below.

2. Launch the app and click the Start Scan Now button.

3. Wait for some time to get the list of outdated drivers.

4. Locate the headset driver and click the Update button next to it.
5. Once the driver updation process is complete, reboot your PC.

Method 12 – Contact Astro Support

If none of the above steps work, it may be time to contact Astro Gaming support for more specialized troubleshooting or to inquire about a potential replacement if your headset is still under warranty.
