Internet Working On an Old Drive but Not Cloned Drive – Here’s What You Can Do!

Internet working on an old drive but not cloned drive

Have you recently cloned your hard drive and are facing issues with the internet on the new one? Well, you are not alone! Several users have recently reported a similar problem. Disk cloning is a commonly used technique used to create a replica of your current device. It allows you to keep your PC handy even when you are traveling, as all you need is a CPU you can use to boot the drive, and you can use the same environment as your PC at home.

While cloning is highly effective in fulfilling the purpose, it requires precision to finish the job. In some cases, when the job is not done thoroughly, errors like the internet working in the old drive but not in the cloned drive appear. If you, too, are facing a similar situation, then keep on reading, as by the end of this post, you will be able to resolve the error on your own!

Without any further ado, let’s get started!

What Are the Possible Causes Behind Internet Not Working on Cloned Drive

When you clone a drive, your entire OS is transferred as it is onto a new drive. There are third-party applications that enable cloning a drive and facilitate the process. However, these applications are not always fully functional. If by any chance an error appears or a file or two are skipped while cloning, system errors may arise in the cloned drive.

Needless to say, the internet not working results from the same situation. The issue may lie in the corresponding files since the error appears with the network connectivity. Some of the reasons that may be the cause of this error on your cloned drive are –

  1. Network Adapter files were not properly copied
  2. Network settings are not configured properly
  3. The Network Adapter driver you are using is outdated

Irrespective of what issue you are facing out of these 3, you may not be able to use the internet on your cloned drive unless you get rid of it. Fortunately, these can be fixed. Check out the next section to find steps that may help you out!

Fixes – Internet Working in Old Drive But Not in Cloned Drive

Fix 1 – Copy the Required Network Adapter Files from the Original Drive

If the cloning was successful and the issue still exists, chances are that some files were left out during the process. For this fix to work, you need access to your original drive to transfer the missing files manually.

Step 1 – On your original (old) drive, navigate to the given path using the explorer –

C:\Windows\System32\driversTyped -Windows System32 drivers

Step 2 – In the folder, spot the network adapter driver files. For Intel Ethernet adapters, copy e1e6232e.sys file, and for Realtek adapters, you may find rtdata.sys.

network adapter driver files

Step 3 – Select the respective file and copy it.
Step 4 – Now navigate to the same path on your new drive and paste the copied files.
Step 5 – After copying the files, restart your PC and check if the issue is resolved.

Fix 2 – Update the Network Adapter Driver

If the file was causing the error, this fix will resolve it instantly. However, if you have copied the file and the internet connectivity issues persist, the problem may be with your driver version. Since the CPU in use can be different for the cloned drive, the version of the adapter may be different, and hence you may require the latest version on the cloned drive.

Updating the driver on your cloned drive might help you out. But clearly, using the Device Manager does not seem to be the correct choice here as the process is long and troublesome. This is why we recommend you use the accelerated method offered by the Advanced Driver Updater.

Here’s how it works –

Step 1 – Go to the link below and download the tool.

Step 2 – Launch the tool and quickly scan to identify outdated drivers.

start scan using advanced driver updater

Step 3 – Check the scan results and use the Update All button to initiate the auto-update process.

After the updates are completed, the tool will automatically restart the PC. Check if the connectivity is resolved after the update or not. It works for the majority of clone drive cases. However, if it does not, do not panic; we also have other fixes.

Fix 3 – Try Resetting Your IP Configuration

If none of the above fixes helped you out, maybe the error lies in the network configuration. You can try to reset the settings and IP configuration using the Command Prompt. Check out the steps below –

Step 1 – Go to the Start menu and search for Command Prompt.

Command Prompt_Admin

Step 2 – Click on Run as administrator from the search results to launch the Command Prompt.
Step 3 – In the Command Prompt, use the following commands one after the other (press enter after each).

– netsh winsock reset

– netsh int ip reset

– ipconfig /release

– ipconfig /renew

After you have run the commands, restart your computer and check for improvements. Suppose the issue is resolved. Good for you. If not, you might have to check for OS updates. Flushing your DNS cache is also an option if you are open to it.

If nothing works, there are possibilities that cloning of the drive was not successfully done. Hence, going back to the old drive and cloning it again maybe your ultimate fix.

Hope these fixes assist you and help you resolve the internet working in the old drive but not in the cloned drive situation. That will be all for this post. Thanks for reading, good luck!
